How many gutter hangers do I need?

The arithmetic is simple. Measure your total gutter run in feet, divide by the spacing you are using, and add a margin for corners, ends and the ones you will drop off the ladder.

The formula

  • At 24 inch spacing: total feet divided by 2
  • At 18 inch spacing: total feet divided by 1.5

Then add roughly 10 percent, and add one extra hanger for each end of each run and each corner. Those are the points that move first and they get a hanger regardless of where the regular spacing falls.

If you are unsure which spacing to work to, use 18 inches and buy accordingly. The difference in hardware cost is small and the difference in how the run holds up is not. Our full reasoning is in gutter hanger spacing.

Measuring the total run

You do not need to get on a ladder. Gutter follows the roof edge, so measure along the ground beside the house, wall by wall, and add up only the walls that actually carry gutter. Gable ends usually do not.

A rough guide for a rectangular house: measure the two long sides and add them. A 40 by 30 foot house with gutter on both long sides is 80 feet of run. If it has gutter all the way round, it is 140.

Worked examples

Small ranch, gutter on two sides

60 feet of run. At 18 inch spacing: 60 divided by 1.5 is 40. Add four for ends and a couple spare, call it 46. Order a 50 pack.

Typical two-storey, gutter all round

140 feet of run. At 18 inch spacing: 140 divided by 1.5 is about 94. Add for four corners, eight run ends and a margin, call it 110. Order a 100 pack plus a 25, or step up to the next size if you have other elevations to do later.

Re-hanging one bad elevation

36 feet. At 18 inches: 24 hangers, plus ends and spares, call it 28. Order a 50 pack rather than a 25 — on a repair you will almost always find the neighbouring run needs help too once you are up there.

Buy more than you calculate

Three reasons, all of them things that come up on real jobs:

  • You will find more bad spots than you planned for. Once the gutter is clean and you are looking at it closely, the sag you came to fix is rarely the only one.
  • Corners and seams need extra. Both sides of every seam, and near every inside and outside corner, on top of the regular spacing.
  • A second trip costs more than a spare hanger. Running short with the ladder already up is the expensive outcome.

Rounding up to the next pack size is nearly always cheaper per hanger as well.

Get the size right first

Quantity is the second question. The first is whether you need 5 inch or 6 inch hangers, and the answer comes from measuring across the open top of the gutter rather than the outside face. Here is how to check.

Common questions

How many hangers do I need per 10 feet?

Six at 18-inch spacing, five at 24-inch. Then add one at each end of the run, one at each corner, and one on both sides of every seam.

Is it worth buying the next pack size up?

Nearly always. The price per hanger drops as the pack grows, and running short with the ladder already up costs more than a box of spares.

What is the difference between the standard and Made in USA packs?

Same fit, same install, same bracket. The difference is where they are made, and the Made in USA packs include a free 1/4-inch magnetic driver bit. The standard line is the lower-priced option.

Do I need anything else to fit them?

A 1/4-inch nut driver in a cordless drill, and nothing else. The screw is already fitted in the bracket, so there is no separate hardware to buy.
